Edge Devices

The IoT brings together disparate devices and systems and allows for large scale sharing of data, not only within organizations but also between organizations and across geographies.  GlobalEdge designs and develops Edge devices that are connected to the sensor inputs and the control outputs in order to sense or control the environment. Input devices send data upstream using either wired or wireless connectivity, either to the next boundary or all the way to the cloud, for processing. These devices may have some intelligence built into them to handle error conditions that occur within their -purview.

Typically, legacy systems that are modified to add IoT support are designed as edge devices.  Newer, ground-up systems would normally take a distributed approach where the intelligence would be built into the upper levels. This helps the system take a broader view, understand the environment better, and make more informed decisions. For example, in a legacy system, a sensor level going beyond threshold values would trigger a shutdown of the system; but in newer distributed systems, the reason for the fault can be ascertained and corrective action taken at the point of failure before it becomes critical. This will save time and money, and offer  a  better quality of service.

Connectivity

Connectivity plays an important role in bringing together the large numbers of IoT devices that are being deployed. The connectivity technology used can either be wired or wireless. Wired connections are mainly used to interconnect legacy system, large powered systems or for low powered systems. Wireless technologies are used when mobility and ease of installation are of prime concern. It is also economical to use wireless technology when communicating over large distances or when it is not possible to lay the necessary cables.

Cloud

As large data sets are involved and varied amounts of computation is required, the cloud, with its scalable storage and dynamic compute capabilities, is the obvious choice in the IoT topology. The applications and services that are required in the cloud fall into four main categories.

Management & Configuration: Under this category, users and devices that have access to the system are set up and the behavior of devices is defined. System configuration related to data store sizes, report generation schedules, and back-ups schedules are set up.

Data Warehouse: All the data is stored and managed in a data warehouse; this is usually the largest part of the cloud infrastructure in terms of resources required. Various storage and database technologies like distributed file systems and scalable and unstructured databases are used for their ability to store and retrieve data from very large datasets.

Analytics: This is one of the most crucial components of an IoT deployment. Analytics is very specific to the domain and application in which the IoT system is deployed. IoT sensors can generate huge amounts of data, but this data has very little value by itself.

With analytics, unimaginable volumes of data can be analyzed to make various forward looking reports on behavior of users, machines, and environments.
In its simplest form, IoT analytics processes large amounts of data directly and prepares trend reports that can be sent to users or passed on to other systems for further action. Examples include, people tracking within stores or vehicle traffic pattern analysis.

Complex analytics engines perform additional computation steps to derive intelligence from the large amounts of data picked up by IoT sensors. Examples of this type of analytics are motor vehicle license plate detection and face detection security systems.

Dissemination: This deals with the distribution of the results of the analytics. This could either be provided to users in a human readable form as reports and graphs or be sent directly to a system to control the environment in which the IoT application is deployed. Web-based technologies are the most preferred method of dissemination of data.
