IoT Gateway

With the proliferation of cloud computing platforms, wireless communications, and low power semiconductor devices along with low cost sensor technology, it is now possible to capture data at very high rates and accuracy and send this data via various networks to a central cloud computing system for storage, processing and analytics. This information, garnered from large amounts of data, provides value addition to people and organizations alike.
The areas of IoT that would positively impact personal life include “Connected Home” and “Connected People” technologies where systems are used to monitor homes and learn about the habits of people living within them. Based on learnt habits, the system can then predict a person’s behavior, adjust the environment accordingly, and provide event information to other relevant systems. An example of such a system being sold today is the Nest Learning Thermostat that is part of the Wink Home Automation system.
While IoT has vast applications in the industry, one of its foremost applications is in improving safety and efficiency. By saving lives and reducing costs, this technology literally pays for itself over the course of its deployment.
Communication plays a key role in collecting and conveying data between IoT nodes and the servers in the cloud. Various methods of communication are used both at the physical layer and at the protocol layer.

One of the key components of an IoT communication system is a gateway device that transcodes and forwards data from edge-nodes to servers on the cloud. The gateway could communicate with edge-nodes over one or more wired or wireless networks. An Intelligent IoT gateway will provide additional local services to devices that are connected to it. Services like device discovery, device management, security, clustering and reliability when provided by the gateway can address some of the challenges faced by large scale IoT deployments.
When deploying IoT infrastructure that uses multiple wired and wireless communication protocols and is sourced from multiple vendors, using an Intelligent IoT Gateway could considerably ease the pain, both in terms of setup time and management.
At GlobalEdge, we have been working on developing Intelligent IoT Gateways that provide the benefits discussed in this paper. As part of our Automotive and Industrial Automation practices, these gateway devices also support networks specific to these industries like CAN, Fieldbus, Profibus, Modbus, etc., thus, helping to bring the benefit of IoT into these industries.

Low Footprint BLE Stack

BLE is a wireless Personal Area Network (PAN) technology designed and marketed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) aimed at applications in the healthcare, fitness, security, and home entertainment industries where low power wireless transmission with long battery life are required.
GlobalEdge’s BLE Single Mode Host Stack is a small footprint software stack that is easily portable to a wide range of embedded devices. This stack is compliant to Bluetooth Specification version 4.0 adopted by Bluetooth SIG.

Key Features include:

  • Supports Bluetooth Core 4.0 specification
  • Supports Central, Peripheral, Observer and Broadcaster roles
  • Supports only Piconet scenarios, ie. device can be in any one of the above mentioned devices roles at a given point of time
  • The Central Role supports connecting to multiple peripheral devices
  • Compile time configuration of roles and optional features to meet low foot print requirements
  • Platform Abstraction Layer to keep the stack implementation platform independent with respect to both interfaces and libraries
  • Provides flexibility for the Platform Abstraction Layer to decide the method in which core stack functionalities can be executed. For instance, the stack can be executed in the context of a thread, a timer/interrupt or in the context of main loop
  • HCI Transport Layer Abstraction to support adding different physical transport interfaces like UART, SPI, USB, etc.
  • Debug mode provided to ease porting and integration
  • Btsnoop packet capture format supported

Given below are some of the application areas:

  • Health Care Devices
  • Sports and Fitness Devices
  • Internet Connectivity
  • IOT devices
  • Beacon Emitters
  • Sensors

It is interesting to look back at how wireless networking has advanced over the years.WiFi has always been about what comes next, both out of the antennas and under the hood. In the future, it is believed that wireless networking has a promising future. WiFi will continue to advance with increasing data rates and antenna counts.
The serial2WiFi Adapter from GlobalEdge is a compact, low power and cost effective solution that can be used to provide Wi-Fi capability to any device with a serial interface. This Serial2WiFi Adapter from GlobalEdge is based on the Wi2Wi SiP. This Adapter can be used to add Wi-Fi support to any 8/16/32 bit controller that has a serial UART interface making it easy to integrate into legacy embedded systems. It can also be used in a cable replacement mode with existing systems where the serial data from either end is transmitted wirelessly and received as serial data at the other end.
The Serial2WiFi adapter supports both infrastructure (via Access Point) and ad-hoc (peer-to-peer) modes of operation. The Serial2WiFi adapter can be used to communicate directly with a network server by converting serial data to Network data.

There are three key areas of improvement in IoT applications: interoperability, complexity and security and GlobalEdge’sSerial2WiFi adapter has them all covered. Here are some salient features which include:

  • SiP Solution
  • Low power consumption
  • Compliant to 802.11 a/b/g
  • Infrastructure and Ad-hoc Mode support
  • Host Interface: RS-232 with Hardware Flow Control
  • Secure communication using WEP, WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK
  • Simple AT Command Line Interface
  • Protocols : IP, UDP, TCP, ARP, ICMP
  • DHCP Network Setup
  • Power Save Support

Some key differentiators that we offer are:

  • Low Footprint
  • Can be integrated in Wi-Fi chipset or Controller
  • AT Commands for Wi-Fi Connection Establishment, TCP and UDP Connections
  • Integrated with TCP/IP Stacks
  • Windows and Linux Virtual COM Driver
  • Auto-connect Mode
  • Use Cases / Application
    • Serial Cable Replacement with Wireless
    • Multiple Device Support using Virtual COM interfaces
    • Serial Port Range Extension

There are several areas of applications which include:

Industry research reports suggest that the global Wi-Fi market is projected to reach USD 33.6 Billion by 2020 and that the Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) for the period from 2015 to 2020 is 17.8%. The increase in the usage of internet and growth in mobile data are the major market drivers in the market. Two major challenges faced by the market are:

  • A lack of expertise to handle the problems and issues that arise in wireless devices and connectivity on a daily basis. The integration of Wi-Fi products and services with other verticals has offered opportunities for the market
  • The lack of security while using Wi-Fi

The USB-over-WiFi solution from GlobalEdgeenables a host to access wired USB devices over a wireless connection or an IP network. This solution can either be integrated into existing devices as a software only stack or it can be made into a bridge device. The USB-over-WiFi bridge can support computers, game consoles, digital video recorders, and other USB-based consumer devices and allow then to access wired USB devices over a wireless network.

The solution consists of an embedded wireless USB software stack and a corresponding USB-over-WiFi bridge driver on the host operating system. In its latest incarnation, we have adapted this stack to be based on the MA-USB and WFA specifications. At GlobalEdge, our years of experience in working with global customers gives us the edge in understanding how things work, therefore, offer the perfect solution.
